FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my status if I travel?

Short trips are fine. Long absences can affect your status – especially EU long-term status, with a maximum of 6 months in a row.

Which years do not count?

Years on temporary-purpose permits, such as the orientation year, au pair, exchange, ICT or seasonal work.

Do I need the civic integration exam?

Yes, at level A2 at least – unless you are exempt, for example with a qualifying Dutch diploma or for medical reasons.

Permanent residence or Dutch citizenship?

Permanent residence lets you keep your nationality. Naturalisation gives you a Dutch passport, but often means giving up your other nationality.

Can my permanent permit be withdrawn?

Only in specific cases – for example if you move away permanently or commit a serious crime.

Do EU citizens need this permit?

No. They follow separate EU rules and can request a permanent residence document after 5 years.
